A Voice Acting journey

Discover what a genuine voice acting journey looks like with challenges and successes mixed in.

You know, there’s a huge misconception out there that to become a voice actor, you have to find some kind of secret door and somehow get your foot in it. I totally bought into that lie myself. My journey was a wild mix of accidental gigs and a whole lot of frustration, but the real story began the moment I realized that the “door” I was looking for was one I’d already walked right through. Let me tell you a little bit about a voice acting journey… my voice acting journey.

Finding Voice Acting Work

For years, I’d been trying to get into radio. My deep, rumbling voice seemed like a perfect fit, but after getting turned down again and again for not having the right education or degrees, I gave up. I fell into that day-to-day grind, just going to work and coming home, feeling pretty unhappy and stuck. Then, one night at a party, I started talking about my failed radio dreams and my interest in voice acting. A guy overheard me and, to my surprise, offered me a small, paid gig recording some internal videos for his company. It was a start, but I felt like I needed to do more. My wife suggested we go to Ichiban Con—a convention we hadn’t been to in ages to try and get some advice. That single day changed everything for me…

When Voice Acting Became Real

I knew Ricco Fajardo was going to be there, and I was dead set on getting some advice. When I finally got the courage to talk to him, he was incredibly welcoming. As I nervously explained that I was trying to get my foot in the door, his whole vibe changed. He stood up, moved me to the side, and spent the next 15 minutes talking to me like a real teacher. When I mentioned the paid work I’d already done, his next words just hit me. “What do you mean you are trying to get your foot in the door? There is no door. You are trying to get your foot into a door that you have already walked through.”

Honestly, I almost cried right there in a room full of people. I walked out of that conversation feeling more determined. I felt like it was a sign! Next, I came across The Voice Actor College booth right around the corner. I talked the representatives ear off and signed up for the course right then and there. A voice acting journey has many ups and downs, but for me… this was just the beginning.

A Voice Acting Journey Begins

Even though I’d already done some professional work, my first real gig was a complete coincidence. The course I enrolled on was the true beginning of my voice acting career because for the first time ever, I had a real sense of direction. The biggest challenge I faced wasn’t a lack of talent or good equipment; it was honestly getting out of my own way. My personality leans towards being pretty negative and critical, so I self-sabotaged a lot. I’d cringe every time I heard my own voice, and I convinced myself I needed a ton of expensive equipment to even start. My personal financial uncertainty, which I started to face about 6-9 months after signing up for the course, also piled on the doubt.

Eventually I decided I didn’t want to just do the week-to-week thing anymore. I wanted to go all-in. Making that financial commitment was a huge moment for me. Subconsciously, I made a firm decision right there that this was officially the thing I was going to do. For the next nine months, I poured everything I had into my voice acting career.

Three Top Voice Acting Tips

It’s tough to give just one piece of advice for a field as extensive as voice acting, so I’ll give you my top three – and one important truth you need to understand from day one:

Be Patient: Success takes time for most people. The idea of getting a “lucky break” at the start of your career is pretty much a fantasy. Embrace the process, celebrate your small wins, and trust that your hard work will pay off over time.
Have Fun: This is a creative job! Your passion will come through in your performance. The more you enjoy the process, the better your acting will be. Don’t let the stress of auditions and self-doubt steal the fun from you.
Voice Acting is Still Acting: This is the most important lesson I learned. It doesn’t matter how many different voices you can do if you can’t act. If you can’t deliver a believable and authentic performance, your voice doesn’t matter. The most amazing voice in the world is useless without believable acting to back it up.

A Voice Acting Journey Summed Up

A voice acting journey is unique to you. However, my journey taught me that the “door” into voice acting isn’t some mystical place you need to find. It’s about seeing your own potential, investing in yourself, and knowing that this is a craft that requires a lot of discipline, a lot of practice, and a commitment to acting – not just making cool sounds or voices. The journey is the destination, and once you start, you’ve already walked through the door…
